The proposed fix should be applied to Syntax box 12-7
in Section 12.4 on page 193.

Also, in syntax box 12-7, an attempt to superscript
certain subrules with a description in a caption below
the box should be cleaned up and made consistent with
the rules as the appear in Annex A, A.9.4.

At the end of Annex A (after A.9.5), there are 6
notes, of which Notes 2 thru 6 are used to annoted
rules in sections A.9.3, A.9.4, and A.9.5. Some of
these annoted rules also appear in syntax box 12-7,
though instead of being superscripted with numbers (as
in Annex A), they are superscripted with characters
(* and /), though not all descriptions have a visable
superscript character.

The caption under Syntax box 12-7 contains descriptions
for * and /, but also contains the descriptions:

"The period (.) in simple_hierarchical_identifier..."
"A simple_identifier and arrayed_reference..."

which have no superscripted character, so it is not clear
what the text is referring to.

The caption text also contains a variety of font sizes.

What do you mean?

Yes, this appears to be IEEE's fault.
It occurs not just here.
All the syntax boxes need to be checked for similar problems,
and probably the tables and figures also.

Same.

That one looks like our fault.

Clarification:

The error is in both "simple_identifier [ [ unsigned_number ] ]" in
simple_hierarchical_branch
and also in "escaped_identifier [ [ unsigned_number ] ]" in
escaped_hierarchical_branch,
in both A.9.4 and in Syntax 12-7.

All are corrected in 2001b.
I added change bars in 2001c.
